BC rules, in plain language
Last updated: October 2026
Rules for using Zibbo safely in British Columbia, and some BC rules every Client and Pro should know. This page is part of our Terms of use.
Zibbo connects only
Zibbo only connects Clients and Pros. Zibbo doesn't vet, recommend or endorse anyone. A badge shows only the check it names (see What badges mean). Zibbo doesn't check anyone's background, criminal record, credentials, licences or insurance. It's up to the Client to choose the Pro: ask for references, look at star ratings from completed jobs, ask to see a copy of any licence or insurance, and do your own checks.
19 and over
You must be 19 or older to use Zibbo.
Licensed trades
In BC, most electrical and gas work must be done by a licensed contractor under a permit from Technical Safety BC. A homeowner permit covers only the homeowner’s own work on their own fully detached home. It doesn’t let you hire someone who isn’t licensed. Plumbing needs a certified plumber and, where required, a local permit.
For that reason, Zibbo does not match electrical, gas, HVAC, refrigeration or new plumbing work to Pros. Tasks that only swap a part like-for-like, or use plug-in devices, are allowed.
Check a licence yourself: Technical Safety BC – Find a Licensed Contractor (technicalsafetybc.ca/regulatory-resources/find-a-licensed-contractor), and SkilledTradesBC – verify a tradesperson’s certification (skilledtradesbc.ca/forms-registration/verify-tradespersons-certification).
Hiring help at home: WorkSafeBC
If you hire someone who isn’t registered with WorkSafeBC, you may become an employer and need coverage. WorkSafeBC says this generally applies to a one-time job of 24 or more combined worker-hours, or ongoing work of 8 or more hours a week. Before larger jobs, ask whether the Pro is registered with WorkSafeBC and get a clearance letter (WorkSafeBC has a free online tool), or ask WorkSafeBC. Zibbo doesn’t check this.
Tasks that aren’t allowed on Zibbo
- Anything illegal, or that needs a licence, permit or certification the Pro doesn’t hold.
- Electrical, gas, HVAC and refrigeration work, and new or moved plumbing lines.
- Tree work near power lines, and felling trees near buildings or lines.
- Roof work, and any work more than one storey off the ground.
- Childcare and babysitting, and personal or medical care of any person.
- Driving people for pay, and driving a client’s boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
- Asbestos, mould removal, hazardous waste, pesticides, explosives, firearms or weapons.
- Demolition, structural work, or work that needs a building permit.
- Debt collection, “following” people, adult services, or anything involving drugs or alcohol sales.
If you’re not sure, ask us first at hello@zibbo.ca.
Respect and fair treatment
Treat everyone with respect. Don’t refuse, rate or treat anyone differently because of race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or age. Use contact details only for the task you agreed on.
Staying safe
- Keep chats on Zibbo until the task is agreed.
- Never pay for work in full before it’s done. Agree on the price and scope in writing.
- Don’t share banking passwords or one-time codes with anyone.
- Stop the job if it feels unsafe. In an emergency, call 911.
- Report scams, threats or unsafe behaviour with the Report button or at hello@zibbo.ca.
Ratings
Each completed job has one star rating per side. The star is a label for what happened. For 1 to 3 stars the rater can tick issues, and 1 or 2 stars need a short note. For 4 or 5 stars the rater can tick what went well. A comment is optional. Public pages show the star label. A strong review may also show the comment and the positive ticks. Issue tags from a lower rating are not published. A Client sees a Pro’s stars, and a Pro sees a Client’s stars. People in the same role don’t see each other’s stars. After Mark job done, the other person’s stars stay hidden until both sides have rated, or for 7 days. The rating can’t be changed. The person rated can post one public reply, and can dispute a rating that doesn't match what happened. An admin keeps or removes it, and both people get a short notice. Fake, traded or threatened ratings aren’t allowed.
If something goes wrong
Talk to the other person first. Disputes about a job are between the Client and the Pro. In BC, most claims up to $5,000 go to the Civil Resolution Tribunal (civilresolutionbc.ca). Consumer Protection BC can help with consumer questions. Tell us at hello@zibbo.ca so we can act on the account if rules were broken.
